Since the 2019 by-election, V. K. Prasanth of CPI(M) has served as MLA of Vattiyoorkavu. A former Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram, he maintained popularity by winning re-election in 2021, beating seasoned party rivals.

The constituency is urban and well-connected. Income sources include government and private service sector jobs, small businesses, retail trade, and NRI remittances. Agriculture and blue economy activities are minimal. With growing real-estate and educational developments, it attracts middle-income professionals, while BPL households are rare. High-income households exist among NRI-backed families and upwardly mobile urban professionals.
Distinctive Features
Vattiyoorkavu is among the greenest suburbs of Thiruvananthapuram, elevated and lined with trees. It houses institutions such as ISRO’s Inertial Systems Unit, Central Polytechnic College, the Geological Survey of India unit, and major schools like Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan and Saraswathy Vidyalaya.
Recent Development Initiatives
The Vattiyoorkavu Junction and Road Development Project — a ₹385 crore intervention — targets widening the Sasthamangalam –Vattiyoorkavu–Peroorkada corridor (10.75 km) into a four-lane 18.5 m carriageway, easing chronic traffic instabilities. Compensation and land acquisition for over 570 commercial establishments have been completed; demolition is underway and tenders are expected in mid-2025, with construction starting by September 2025.
The District Development Committee, chaired by the District Collector, reviewed local priority areas including the Vattiyoorkavu market lift-up, street vendor relocation, better street lighting, and formation of a metropolitan planning body. The MLA emphasized creating a proper vending zone and enhancing public safety.
Challenges remain in rebuilding the Vattiyoorkavu Government LP School, delayed by administrative inertia despite approved land relocation. Officials are pressing for immediate progress in reconstruction.
Conclusion
A largely middle-income, urban constituency, Vattiyoorkavu combines institutional presence, residential growth, and suburban greenery. With MLA V. K. Prasanth at the helm and priority infrastructure projects — including road upgrades and market enhancements — underway, the region is poised to ease congestion and elevate civic amenities. Porter platforms like weone hold promise for amplifying citizen awareness on urban planning, rehabilitation, and public participation in local governance.
