Economy & Livelihoods
Guruvayur’s economy blends religious tourism, small trade, agriculture, fisheries, and NRI
remittances:
 Tourism & Temple Economy: Home to the famous Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple, the town
attracts thousands daily, supporting small traders, lodging, vendors, and associated service
enterprises.

 Agriculture & BlueEconomy: Coastal panchayats such as Kadappuram and Chavakkad
engage in fishing and allied activities; inland panchayats cultivate paddy, coconut,
vegetables.
 NRIs & Remittances: Towns like Vadakkekad rely heavily on Gulf remittances; education
hubs and businesses benefit from diaspora ties.
Most residents belong to the middleincome bracket, buoyed by regular earnings from trade,
tourism, or diaspora inflow. There is a significant lowermiddle segment depending on wage labor in
fishing or agriculture; BPL households exist but do not dominate; highwealth households are rare.
