Chadayamangalam Assembly Constituency (Constituency No. 122) is a semi-rural
and agrarian segment in the eastern region of Kollam district, and forms part of
the Kollam Lok Sabha constituency. In the 2021 Kerala Assembly elections, J.
Chinchu Rani of the CPI(M) won the seat,

Panchayats & Boundaries
Chadayamangalam constituency spans the midland and highland regions and
includes the following panchayats:
 Chadayamangalam
 Ittiva
 Elamad
 Madavoor
 Kottukkal
 Chithara
 Velinalloor
 Kumaramkudy
These areas are hilly, with rubber plantations, small streams, and rocky terrain
interspersed with traditional villages and modern settlements. It borders
Thiruvananthapuram district on the south and Pathanapuram constituency on
the east.

Geographic & Demographic Peculiarities

Chadayamangalam is best known for the Jatayu Earth’s Center (Jatayupara) —
a mythologically significant and now tourism-prominent location. The region is
also prone to landslides and water scarcity, especially in the highland zones.
The population is predominantly rural, with Hindus and Muslims forming the
major communities, along with SC populations in areas like Kottukkal and
Velinalloor. The constituency boasts a high literacy rate of around 94.5%, though
education infrastructure in interior villages remains uneven.

Income & Livelihood Sources
 NRI Remittances: A key pillar of the local economy. Many residents work
in the Gulf, particularly in construction and driving jobs.
 Agriculture: Rubber, coconut, pepper, arecanut, and banana are main crops.
Farmers face challenges due to market price fluctuations.
 Tourism & Local Trade: The Jatayu Earth Center has generated small-
scale trade, homestays, and employment opportunities.
 Daily Wage Work & Public Employment: Government jobs, labor work,
and driving (auto/taxi) are common.
 Small-Scale Retail & Services: Shops, petty traders, and services like
mobile repair, tailoring, and home construction.

Economic Strata
Chadayamangalam’s population is largely lower-middle and middle class, with
wide dependence on remittances and agriculture. However, a visible BPL
population exists among landless laborers, elderly rural households, and some
tribal pockets.

Recent Development Efforts
 Road widening and connectivity projects under PMGSY and KIIFB,
especially linking Ittiva and Chithara

 Boost to eco-tourism infrastructure at Jatayupara with improved access,
water supply, and local employment
 Agricultural subsidies and group farming support for rubber and banana
farmers
 Digital integration of panchayats via weone, enabling easy access to
welfare, health, and land records

Conclusion
Chadayamangalam reflects Kerala’s rural resilience — rooted in agriculture,
sustained by remittances, and slowly transforming through eco-tourism and
digital governance. With effective grassroots planning and platforms like
weone, the constituency can address its geographic challenges and unlock
inclusive progress.
