Thiruvalla Assembly Constituency: A
Prosperous Hub

Demographics
In 2021, there were approximately 212,288 registered voters, with a female-to-male ratio of around
1,097 females per 1,000 males. Scheduled Castes constitute roughly 11–11.2% of the electorate, and
literacy is exceptionally high, about 96.9%, reflecting Kerala’s overall educational standard. The
religious mix mirrors broader Kerala: Hindus majority, followed by Christians and Muslims.
Economic Characteristics & Peculiarities
 NRIs and remittances: Thiruvalla is known as a "Town of NRIs” with a significant diaspora,
especially in the Gulf region. Remittance income plays a major role in local household
economies and supports consumption, property investments, and education.
 Trade, services, and commerce: Thiruvalla has emerged as a retail and banking hub—with
several major nationalized banks, retail chains, clinics, schools and hospitality services
thriving in the town center. Reddit users note the arrival of branded retail and electronics
stores in recent years.
 Agriculture and allied sectors: Surrounding panchayats host rubber plantations, paddy fields
and smallholder crops. Inland waterways support small fishing activities but the blue
economy is modest compared to coastal areas.
 Transport and public sector employment: The town’s KSRTC terminal, educational
institutions, hospitals, and proximity to rail-heads make it a civic and employment hub.
Economic Strata
The constituency is predominantly middle-income. Most households enjoy stable incomes from
remittance inflows, small-scale agriculture, retail, services, and salaried public or private-sector jobs.
BPL households are relatively rare and mostly found in marginalized hamlets. High-income
households are fewer—typically families with lucrative overseas earnings or substantial land and
business assets.
Recent Development Activity
 The Thiruvalla bypass road, inaugurated in February 2021, established a 2.3 km flyover over
the YMCA junction to reduce town-center congestion. However, it has drawn criticism for
being signal-heavy and offering limited time savings.

 Under the state Navakerala Sadas programme, local funds were directed toward enhancing
civic infrastructure, drainage systems, canal revamps, road maintenance, and improvements
in public facilities across panchayats and the municipality.
 Election infrastructure was also upgraded—with better polling amenities, disabled access,
clean sanitation, and wider deployment of EVMVVPATs to enhance voter comfort and
transparency.
 Reddit posts highlight retail expansion—new branded stores and electronic outlets set up in
recent years, indicating growth in urban services and consumer culture.

Thiruvalla Assembly Constituency stands out as a literate, well-connected civic and commercial
center. With its strong NRI presence, stable remittance-based economy, retail-driven urban core,
and agriculture-rich hinterland, it is firmly middle-income in character. Recent infrastructure
enhancements—spanning roads, civic amenities, and polling modernization—underscore a
constituency moving progressively toward balanced growth rooted in education, diaspora, and
small-town enterprise.
