Demographics
As of the 2021 election roll, there were approximately 202,956 electors with a female-to-male ratio
favoring women—a typical trait in Kerala’s demographic profile—along with a turnout of over 73%.
Literacy levels hover above 96%, and Scheduled Castes account for roughly 10–12% of the
population. Religious composition reflects coastal Kerala: significant Hindu majority, sizable Christian
and Muslim communities, especially in Chettikulangara and surrounding wards.
Economic Peculiarities
The blue economy drives the region’s livelihood: inland fisheries, prawn and shrimp farming,
and seafood processing units near Kayamkulam supply both domestic markets and exports
via Cochin port.
Agriculture thrives inland and in low-lying paddy fields—paddy, tapioca, sesame, and
coconut are common crops, especially in Chettikulangara and Pathiyoor.
Kayamkulam town supports thriving trade, retail, transport, and small business; the
presence of research institutes like the Onattukara Regional Agricultural Research
Station—and CPCRI’s Coconut Research Station—enhances agrarian innovation and
employment.
NRI remittances exist but are secondary; the coastal ecosystem and fisheries-based trade
remain the primary economic backbone.
Economic Strata
Most residents fall into the middle-income range: fisherfolk, coir workers, small traders, agricultural
laborers, and processing-unit employees form the core workforce. BPL households are relatively few
and mostly concentrated in lowlying flooded zones. High-income families are rare—typically tied to
ownership of export enterprises, coconut experiment stations, or well-established retail-agribusiness
ventures.
Recent Development Activities
As part of Kerala’s Navakerala Sadas initiative, Kayamkulam received development funds
focused on improving drainage, strengthening canal embankments, upgrading rural roads,
and enhancing public utilities in wards like Krishnapuram and Bharanikkavu (via local MLA-
led projects).
The Election Commission introduced enhanced polling infrastructure—including better
facilities, disabled access, EVMVVPAT setups, and partial webcasting in polling booths to
improve transparency and voter comfort.
Community-led discussions (especially on Reddit) have highlighted the need for shaded
waiting areas at booths to mitigate heat stress during voting—a public feedback insight
feeding into future improvements.
Kayamkulam Assembly Constituency represents a literate, politically engaged coastal population
anchored in fisheries, coastal agriculture, and small trade. A predominantly middleincome region, its
economy combines tradition and science—agrarian research, blueeconomy ventures, and small-
scale commerce. Recent infrastructure enhancements, election modernization, and community
feedback-driven civic upgrades point to a constituency moving steadily toward balanced, inclusive
development rooted in its unique coastal identity.
