Demographics
According to the 2011 census and voting rolls, approximately 82% of residents live in urban areas,
while 18% live in rural parts. The constituency had roughly 193,500 electors in 2016 and nearly
200,000 by 2021, with a voter gender ratio of approximately 1,066 females per 1,000 males and a
registered turnout close to 76% in the latest polls. Scheduled Castes comprise roughly 3–4%, and
Scheduled Tribes under 0.5% of the population. Literacy stands above 96%, mirroring Kerala’s high
educational standards.
Economic Peculiarities
The blue economy dominates: seafood processing, shrimp aquaculture, backwater fisheries,
and coir exports remain key. The presence of Matsyafed (the apex fisheries cooperative) and
local processing units tie into Cochin port for exports.
Agriculture plays a supporting role—limited inland paddy, coconut and vegetable farming in
wards like Mannancherry and Mararikulam South.
Trade and services thrive in Alappuzha town—retail, transport, hospitality, tourism
(especially houseboat backwater circuits), education, and small businesses form a
considerable part of local employment.
NRI remittances exist but are comparatively moderate here; economic life relies more on
fisheries and tourism channels.
Economic Strata
A large majority fall into the middle-income bracket—fisherfolk, seafood processors, coir artisans,
retail vendors, hospitality staff, and service workers. BPL households exist but remain limited, often
in slum clusters or remote waterlogged wards. High-income households are relatively few—typically
those owning seafood export units or sizable coastal businesses.
