Geographic & Demographic Peculiarities
Nearly 63% rural, 37% urban, with over 12.5% Scheduled Caste population and negligible ST
presence (~0.4%). Literacy rate mirrors Ernakulam’s high (~95%). The gender ratio is 1,036 females
per 1,000 males as of 2021 and enabled a voter turnout of 80.99%, one of the highest in the district.

Economic activity is a mix:
 Agriculture: rubber, pineapple, banana, spices in rural panchayats;
 Small-scale trade and businesses: shops, local services;
 NRIs and remittances: many families benefit from Gulf earnings;
 Emerging IT focus: Kizhakkambalam is fast evolving with Infopark Phase III land‐pooling
under way.
The majority belong to middleincome strata—landholding farmers, service and trade families. BPL
sections exist in upland and agriculturedependent villages; highincome households are fewer though
rising near IT/industrial zones.
Recent Developments
Infopark’s Phase III landpooling scheme in Kizhakkambalam—covering ~300 acres and expected to
bring ₹12,000 crore investment and over 100,000 IT jobs—is now cleared to proceed under the
Greater Cochin Development Authority, pending IT department approval.
Additionally, the emergence of the corporatebacked Twenty20 outfit in local politics (controlling
four of the eight panchayats) marked Kunnathunad a highvisibility seat in the 2021 and 2024
elections.
Local infrastructure investments—road upgrades, water supply improvements, and community hall
renovations—are underway via panchayat and district development funds, aligned with Vision
Keralastyle local planning. These aim at democratizing development while integrating rural
panchayats into suburban growth corridors.
