Geography & Demographics
Covering about 127 km², Aluva lies on the banks of the Periyar River, near Cochin International
Airport at Nedumbassery. The population is religiously mixed: Hindus (~55%), Muslims (~27%), and
Christians (~18%) per 2011 census data. The gender ratio favors females at 1,046 women per 1,000
men and voter turnout was 75.33% in 2021, down from 83.21% in 2016.
Economy & Social Profile
Aluva’s economic profile blends commerce, remittances, agriculture, and emerging industries. A
sizeable NRI population contributes through Gulf remittances. The constituency lacks blueeconomy
fisheries but supports coconut, rice, and banana farming in peri-urban panchayats. Most
households are middle-income, with few in high-income brackets and a minor section in BPL
category.
Trade & Industry
Aluva is a key trade and industrial hub along NH 544 and near Cochin Airport. It hosts major
transport and logistics facilities, including Aluva KSRTC bus terminal (undergoing a ₹6 crore upgrade
to a 30,000 sq ft passenger center). The Aluva Metro Station, opened in 2017, serves as a major
transit node, boosting connectivity for commuters across Kochi region. The upcoming national-
cooperative Aluva Market project—spanning 1.82 lakh sq ft and costing ₹48.3 crore—will feature 88
shops, a supermarket, and cold storage, targeted for completion within 11 months.
Recent Development Activities
₹10 crore has been allocated to widen Aluva Market Road to a 12 m carriageway with
elevated walkways, easing traffic near rice market and church junction.
The new Parappuram–Vallamkadavu Bridge, opened in August 2023, reduces travel time to
Kochi Airport by 10 km, improving connectivity across Nedumbassery and Kalady routes.
The Kinfra drinking water project, originally proposed to boost industrial water supply, faces
delays due to local concerns over Periyar River capacity.
Several key railway overbridges in nearby areas—such as Angamaly–Aluva crossings—are
slated for full funding under a Southern Railway safety initiative.
Aluva Assembly Constituency blends tradition and transit: a riverine town with robust trade, high
literacy, and a thriving middle-income segment undergirds its economy. Its strategic position near
the airport and transport corridors, coupled with major infrastructure investments—from the
municipal market to market-road enhancement and bridge connectivity—positions Aluva as a vital
district growth node rooted in civic vitality and evolving modernity.
