Geography & Demographics
With an approximate area of ~29 km² under Kodungallur Municipality and surrounding villages, the 2011 census recorded around 70,868 residents, with literacy at 95.1%. The religious makeup is roughly 64% Hindu, 32% Muslim, and 4% Christian. SC communities constitute around 7.8% of the population; ST presence is minimal (~0.1%). Elector count rose from ~176,055 in 2011 to ~192,933 in 2021.
Economic Profile
The constituency’s economy blends agriculture (coconut, rice, banana), fishing and coastal livelihoods, small trade, and a modest NRI remittance sector receiving diaspora funds from the Gulf. Kodungallur town hosts retail shops, fish markets, cultural tourism linked to the historic Bharani festival at Kodungallur Bhagavathy Temple, and service businesses. Most residents fall into the middle-income bracket, with limited BPL households and few high-income classes.
Political Setting
Since 2016, V. R. Sunil Kumar of the CPI has represented Kodungallur, winning again in 2021.
Recent Developments
A key initiative: a demand to extend the NH 544 Kundannoor–Angamaly bypass up to Kodungallur, spearheaded by local MP Benny Behanan. This ₹2,500 crore proposal aims to ease traffic flows toward Kochi airport and Vallarpadam port, enhancing economic connectivity and decongesting Kochi–Thrissur highway corridors.
Under Kerala’s Navakerala Sadas programme, each Assembly constituency—including Kodungallur—received funding for local development projects ranging from road improvements, drainage works, and public infrastructure upgrades intended to be completed within 18 months.
