Geography & Demographics
Puthukkad town is situated on the banks of the Kurumali (Muplyam) River, about midway between
Thrissur and Chalakudy, and lies on National Highway 544 with robust rail (Puthukkad station on the
Irinjalakuda–Thrissur line) and bus connectivity.
As of 2021, there were ~201,035 registered voters, with a literacy rate over 90% as per earlier
census. The electorate is nearly balanced across gender lines, slightly favoring females.
Economy & Social Profile
Puthukkad is best described as a middle-income assemblage of traders, small businesses,
educational professionals, and NRIs, with limited high-income households and fewer BPL families.
Agriculture (coconut, banana, rice) and local retail trade thrive, especially along the NH corridor.
NRIs contribute through remittances, albeit not as heavily as in coastal areas. There is minimal
blueeconomy influence (no direct coastline).
Political Representation
Since May 2021, K. K. Ramachandran of CPI(M) has represented Puthukkad, winning with ~73,365
votes (~47%) and defeating Congress and BJP rivals by a margin exceeding 27,350 votes. Voter
turnout in 2021 was around 75.6–81% across elections.
Recent Developments
 Regional road projects under the state and Thrissur district include NH expansion, local
bypass upgrades, and panchayat road resurfacing linking panchayats like Vallachira and
Parappukkara.
 Educational infrastructure at institutions such as Govt. VHSS, HSS Mupliyam, and local
Catholic and Anganwadi schools has seen minor upgrades and digital equipment rollout.
 The Puthukkad railway station area is under redesign plans to improve pedestrian access,
shelters, and kiosk zones for commuters.
 Though lacking coastal tourism, town-based markets, mobile retail and new shops along
NH 544 have boosted commercial vibrancy.
