Geographic & Demographic Profile
Located along State Highway 61 and served by Irinjalakuda railway station (station code IJK), the
region blends tradition with connectivity. From the 2011 census, the town had around 51,585
residents, with a high literacy rate of 96% (male 97%, female 94.6%). As of 2021, there were 191,930
registered electors, overseen by MLA R. Bindu (CPI(M)) who secured 62,493 votes (40.3%) in May
2021 elections under Thrissur parliamentary area.
Economic and Social Fabric
Irinjalakuda is an agro-industrial town, known for coconut oil mills, cashew processing, bell-metal
crafts, and cattle feed production (notably Kerala Solvent Extractions Ltd and Kerala Feeds Ltd).
There is also modest NRI remittance and small-scale trading, especially in town areas. Fishing plays a
minor role, unlike Kerala’s coastal belts. The majority of residents fall into the middle-income
economic strata, while BPL households are few, and high-income earners (via NRIs or major
industrial owners) are a small segment.

Known for vibrant cultural institutions like Christ College (A++ NAAC grade) and a number of
engineering and arts colleges, Irinjalakuda is a hub of education and social activism. The historic
Shanmugham Canal once connected trade routes to Cochin, giving the town its old moniker
“Chanthappura” for commerce, though its water-borne significance has waned.
Recent Developments
The Southern Railway has fully funded road-overbridge construction at level crossings near
Irinjalakuda, notably on the Pudukad–Irinjalakuda line, aiming completion within 18 months.
As part of the Kerala government's regional review meetings (May 2025), pending
infrastructure and civic projects in Irinjalakuda constituency were assessed under missions
like Nava Kerala, Haritha Keralam, and public education improvement.
Irinjalakuda Assembly Constituency represents a harmonious blend of education-led civic culture,
agro-industrial livelihoods, and middle-class stability. With strong infrastructure upgrades,
educational excellence, and sustained polling engagement, it stands as a constituency rooted in
tradition yet embracing modern development.
