In the 2021 election, Kunnamkulam had 174–176 polling stations depending on the source,
underlining its sizeable electorate (about 1.9 lakh voters). Some of the key polling station locations
include: Iyyappan Memorial LP School (Kattakambal Blocks A/B/C), Panchayath Office Kattakambal,

halls at Vattamavu, Cheru Memorial LP School Karikkad, Govt Polytechnic Kizhoor, St Joseph’s HS
West Mangad, Mar Kurilose Memorial UP School Porkulam, St Mary’s Women’s College Akkikavu,
Gov Vocational HS Kunnamkulam Adadamic, and many more across wards like Anjoor, Kanippayyur,

Demographic Snapshot
The constituency enjoys an outstanding literacy rate (~95.3 percent), typical of Thrissur district.
Hinduism accounts for majority (~55 percent), followed by Islam (~26 percent) and Christianity
(~18 percent), reflecting Kerala’s pluralistic social fabric. Scheduled caste population is about
14 percent.
Economic Landscape and Peculiarities
Economically, the region blends agriculture (paddy fields, particularly around villages like
Chemmanthatta), trade, business, and a robust NRIdriven remittance economy especially in smaller
towns like Vadakkekad and surrounding panchayats. Kunnamkulam town itself is one of the major
commercial hubs of Thrissur district after Thrissur city, with active wholesale trade, printing, retail,
and small industries – earning mention as a top commercial centre. The blue economy (fisheries) is
less dominant here than in Kerala’s coastal belt.
Overall, the majority of the constituency’s population belongs to the middle-income strata,
benefiting from NRI remittances and smallbusiness income; segments with belowpovertyline (BPL)
status do exist in agricultural pockets, but higherincome segments are relatively few.
Recent Developments
In recent years (2024–2025), infrastructure improvements have been in focus: road upgrades on the
Thrissur–Kunnamkulam–Guruvayur axis have been overdue but some rehabilitation work has
started, albeit with local complaints about potholes and delays. At the state level, investments
pledged under the Invest Kerala Global Summit 2025, including major road and industrial projects,
are expected to benefit the Thrissur region broadly, enhancing connectivity and creating jobs for
youth in towns like Kunnamkulam.
In summary, Kunnamkulam Assembly Constituency is a geographically modest but commercially
vibrant part of Thrissur district, with a literate, diverse and largely middleincome population
supported by agriculture, trade and NRI remittances. With a network of ~174 polling stations across
municipality and panchayats, it remains politically active. Recent infrastructure initiatives promise
better roads and economic opportunity as part of wider statelevel investment strategies.
