Geographic & Demographic Traits
Nestled along the banks of the Chaliyar River, Eranad is a fertile midland region blending agrarian villages and semi-urban centers like Edavanna and Areekode. Literacy in Malappuram district is high (~93.5%) and the constituency recorded over 77% turnout in 2021. Eranad also recorded the highest voter turnout among the Malappuram segments during the 2024 Wayanad bypoll.
Economic Livelihood Patterns
Agriculture dominates rural livelihoods, with coconut, banana, rice, and spice cultivation in panchayats like Areekode, Edavanna, and Urangattiri.
Remittances (NRIs) form a critical income stream; many households rely on Gulf migration income.
Trade & small businesses: Towns such as Areekode and Edavanna support spice, retail, timber, and service-oriented commerce.
Public services & education: Schools, cooperative banks, and local administration provide employment. There is no significant blue economy due to the inland positioning.
Economic Strata
Most households belong to the middle-income bracket, sustained by farming yields, trade earnings, and remittance income. A smaller group—landholders, successful traders, and professionals—reside in the higher-income tier. Some small farmers, landless laborers, or marginal producers live below the poverty line, although high literacy and welfare schemes have limited widespread hardship.
Recent Development Initiatives
Under continuous representation by P. K. Basheer, the constituency has seen steady social-infrastructure upgrades:
Improved roads and bridge connectivity linking villages such as Edavanna, Kavanoor, Areekode, and Urangattiri.
Renovation of schools and madrassas, many functioning as polling venues, enhancing civic infrastructure.
Expansion of agricultural extension services for spice growers and smallholders.
Reinforcement of cooperative banking and digital financial inclusion camps, supporting local traders and NRI families.
Enhanced urban services—community halls, sanitation drives, and anganwadi outreach in Areekode and Edavanna wards.
Eranad Assembly Constituency is a riverine heartland marked by fertile greenery, literacy, and NRI-supported stability. Anchored by agriculture and small-scale commerce, with a solid middle-income demographic, it is now steadily enhancing infrastructure, civic facilities, and rural resilience—guided by community involvement and sustained political stewardship.
