Kottayam Municipality is one of six municipalities within the Kottayam district in Kerala. It was established after the implementation of the Kerala Municipalities Act in 1994. The municipality is governed by a council with members elected from 52 wards. Kottayam is also known as "Akshara Nagari", meaning "city of letters," due to its contributions to print media and literature. The current Chairperson of Kottayam Municipality is Bincy Sebastian.
