There are approximately 165 polling stations across the constituency. Example booths include: Sreenarayana Basic UPS (North wing), Thalassery GM UP School clusters, Tagore Vidya Nikethan HS, and multiple community LP schools in Chokli, Eranholi and Kadirur wards. Residents earn livelihoods through a mix of:
Trade & commerce: Thalassery’s spice bazaars, timber, coir and retail businesses are time-honored economic staples.
Blue economy & fisheries: Coastal and estuarine communities engage in fishing, small-scale aquaculture, and boat-based commerce.
Remittances (NRIs): A sizable proportion of middle-class households depend on Gulf migration remittances.
Local agriculture: Surrounding panchayat zones contribute coconut, banana, paddy, pepper and traditional cash crops via smallholder farmers.
Tourism and cultural enterprises: Historic sites—including Thalassery Fort, beaches, and Theyyam festivals—pull tourists and create allied business opportunities.
Socio-economic Strata
Most inhabitants belong to the middle-income segment, buoyed by stable earnings from remittances, trade, public services, and small enterprises. A minority of families—veteran merchants, property owners, and professionals—occupy upper-income brackets, while some coastal fisherfolk and smallholding rural households fall under the below-poverty-line category, though ongoing civic programs have improved their conditions.
Political and Development Context
Thalassery’s electoral politics—marked by decades of fierce contestation between the CPI(M) and RSS—have long shaped the constituency’s civic identity. A. N. Shamseer retained the seat in 2021 with a comfortable margin.
Recent development priorities include urban renewal projects in Thalassery town, enhancement of fishing harbour facilities, road improvements connecting coastal wards and interiors, and preservation/promotional projects around historic tourism attractions. Educational infrastructure and civic amenities in wards like Eranholi and Panniyannur have also been upgraded in recent years.
Thalassery Assembly Constituency uniquely fuses coastal cultural heritage, vibrant trading economies, and educated civic participation. Anchored by spice markets, fisheries, tourism, remittance incomes, and small agriculture, its population is largely middle-class with pockets of vulnerability along the coast. With balanced municipal development, legacy infrastructure, and grassroots political engagement, Thalassery is both deeply historic and forward-moving in its developmental trajectory
